The oldest theater in the capital of Kazakhstan, the State Academic Russian Drama Theater named after M. Gorky in Astana, was founded in the late 19th century and has earned the steadfast loyalty of its audiences thanks to its ability to perceive, reflect the times, and value truth in its work. Currently, the theater's repertoire includes 31 productions based on works of Russian and international drama, representing a wide range of genres and aesthetic trends, appealing to audiences of all ages. A crucial tradition of the theater is nurturing its audience from a very young age. For young theater lovers, the repertoire includes seven fairy tales. In 1899, with funding from local patrons, a permanent troupe was established, with a repertoire that enjoyed great popularity among the city's residents. The first production was Fedorov's one-act vaudeville, "Outburst on the Hearth," followed by a three-act joke, "Scandal in a Noble Family." Since 1959, the theater has been named after Maxim Gorky. In 2012, the theater was awarded the status of "Academic."
