The Holy Dormition Cathedral in Astana is one of the largest Orthodox churches in Kazakhstan. Opened in 2009, it has since become an important center of spiritual life in the capital. Its architecture combines traditional Russian style with modern design. Its white walls and golden domes lend the building a solemn and majestic appearance. The interior is decorated with icons, frescoes, and a carved iconostasis. It can accommodate approximately 4,000 people. This church serves not only as a place of prayer but also as a symbol of spirituality, faith, and cultural heritage. Services, holidays, and events are held here, bringing together Orthodox believers and visitors to the city.

Orthodox Christians are the second largest religious denomination in Kazakhstan. Every major city in the country, along with a major mosque, boasts a large Orthodox church or cathedral, often of equal height. The Holy Dormition Cathedral is a distinctive center for the Orthodox community in Kazakhstan. The cathedral houses four unique relics: a fragment of the relics of St. Andrew the First-Called, fragments of the relics of saints of God from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, an icon containing a fragment of the relics of St. Alexander of Svir, an icon of St. Mary of Egypt, and an icon of the Mother of God "Kazan" (Our Lady of Kazan), a gift from Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'. The interior of the cathedral is decorated by artists from the Russian village of Palekh, renowned for its icon painters. The Cathedral houses the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan and the Cyril and Methodius Spiritual and Cultural Center.
